+ Lead Organizer (Field Director)
Freelancers Union, a national non–profit organization, represents the needs and concerns of today's independent workforce through advocacy, information and service. Freelancers Union is embarking on an ambitious political program capable of persuading Freelancers Union's 130,000+ members to contribute, to vote, and to take action. Through a combination of traditional grassroots organizing and online social media, an exceptional Lead Organizer (Field Director) is needed to help aggressively grow Freelancers Union's ranks, mobilize members, and raise money to support candidates and legislative priorities for the growing independent workforce. The Lead Organizer will report to the Associate director of Advocacy and Policy and will hold primary responsibility for developing Freelancers Union's member mobilization strategy.
Responsibilities include:
- Member Engagement/Volunteer Recruitment
- Develop and implement Freelancers Union's member engagement and recruitment strategy
- Set and monitor progress toward reaching quantifiable outreach and member mobilization goals
- Develop and implement field plan to reach goals
- Develop infrastructure to replicate / expand campaigns modeled in NY to other areas
- Develop politically based or community–based expansion plan to recruit new members and increase member participation in and outside New York
- Assist with turnout for member events
- Leadership Development and Training
- Oversee bi–annual Member Elections and related member leadership strategy
- Develop and implement a ladder of engagement and responsibility for member leaders
- Develop and coordinate regular member trainings and meetings
- Online Organizing and Community Building
- Develop strategies for engaging members online and recruiting them into offline activities to accomplish Freelancers Union's political goals
- Conduct experiments with social applications, both within and beyond the Freelancers Union website
- Increase member identification and participation with Freelancers Union
- Political Field Program
- Develop and oversee field plan for impacting New York State's 2010 elections
- Maintain relationships with campaigns of endorsed candidates
- Set GOTV volunteer and fundraising targets
- Develop and implement strategy to increase voter registration in targeted districts
- Fundraising
- Oversee efforts to meet fundraising goals for freelancers Union's Political Action Committees
- Manage regional activites and organizers as needed
Successful candidates will have demonstrated:
- Experience overseeing field operations for at least two campaigns, including developing and implementing field plans, targeting member and voter outreach, and overseeing one or more organizers
- Strong experience developing and implementing strategies to energize and mobilize member or issue–based constituencies behind key initiatives
- Experience updating and maintaining volunteer databases. Experience with VAN and Convio a strong plus
- Expert familiarity and agility using new media
- The ability to manage and/or contribute to multiple projects, both individual and team–based
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, a collaborative work style and an entrepreneurial spirit

We are seeking a dynamic Senior Development Manager who will work closely with and report to the Executive Director. The Senior Development Manager will supervise all fundraising activities, including philanthropic, social enterprise and individual giving, that contribute to Freelancers Union’s ambitious development goals. The Development Manager will improve internal fundraising systems, with a particular focus on markedly increasing funding through grant sources; manage all development-related reporting requirements, and lead the development team in both strengthening current and creating new relationships.
Responsibilities:
- Design, develop and implement strategies focused on fostering fundraising partnerships (foundation, government, corporate and individual) and coordinate the involvement of senior leadership in relationship-building activities
- Work closely with the Event Planning team to ensure the success of new and existing donor-focused events by leveraging local and national networks, and recruiting, coordinating and motivating volunteers and supporters
- Manage, support and coordinate development team and external consultants as appropriate to maximize involvement and impact
- Manage all functions of the development department. This includes: designing and driving action plans to achieve annual fundraising goals; developing and fortifying fundraising systems and processes; and preparing budgets and forecasts and setting and tracking goals related to all fundraising activities
- Support the organization’s senior leadership, and align fundraising efforts with Freelancers Union’s overall strategic plan and organizational goals
Qualifications:
- Five to seven years of experience managing development functions with strong experience in grant–writing
- Demonstrated success developing and fostering fundraising relationships as well as experience with and/or knowledge of government fund sources. Knowledge of the New York philanthropic community preferred.
- Exceptional understanding of Development networks, practices and strategies across various sectors and industries, as well as the acumen and agility to implement and re-engineer them as needed.
- Strong management skills, with the ability to mentor, coach, and supervise development professionals in early stages of their careers
- A professional, resourceful style with the ability to work as a team member or independently
- Relentless energy and drive toward achieving goals, with an entrepreneurial approach to fund raising and problem-solving
- A friendly, collegial personality with compulsive integrity, and a well conditioned sense of humor
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, development databases and social networking technologies

- Pre–project and business case analysis, including gathering, documenting and interpreting end–user business requirements

+ Chief Financial Officer – Freelancers Insurance Company
Freelancers Insurance Company (FIC) was founded in 2008 in New York State to provide health insurance for independent workers, and is a wholly owned for–profit subsidiary of Freelancers Union, a nonprofit 501(c)(4) organization. Our success and growth over the last year and a half have shown that it's possible to create a group with the strength and longevity to be a sustainable "risk pool" for health insurance.
We are seeking an exceptional Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to provide financial leadership as a knowledgeable and trusted resource on the Executive team of FIC. The ideal candidate for this role will possess at least 5 years of Health Insurance finance management experience, including financial analysis and reporting, financial modeling and budgeting, and knowledge of insurance accounting and related regulatory compliance issues. The CFO will report to the CEO of Freelancers Union
Other responsibilities include:
- Protect and secure the financial assets of FIC
- Develop and maintain financial plans, programs and policies consistent with Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
- Direct financial activites (i.e. Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll), and cash management including financial planning and reporting, general accounting, group purchasing, reinsurance, fixed assets, audit, preparation of budget, tax and treasury functions
- Assume accountability for internal financial controls and audit liasion, risk based capital management and overall financial management
- Develop positive relationships with FIC board, Department of Insurance and rating agencies with the ability to convey FIC's unique and social purpose
Successful candidates will have completed a Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field (Masters and/or M.B.A. preferred) and will also have:
- A minimum of 5 to 10 years of responsible senior management finance and/or accounting experience, ideally for an established health plan or health insurance company experiencing high growth
- Demonstrated experience creating an inter–affiliate budget and managing all related allocation processes
- Exceptional corporate financial strategic acumen and strong understanding of and experience with statutory accounting. C.P.A certification strongly preferred
- The ability to work in a highly collaborative, entrepreneurial environment

Responsibilities will include:
- Work closely with Communications Team on executive communications strategy
- Provide research support in R&D, Policy and other relevant areas and participate in brainstorming sessions and other meetings, demonstrating a strong grasp of researched material
- Coordinate and facilitate communication between ED and organization directors

- Manage staff meeting preparations (scheduling, agendas, presenter materials, PowerPoint documents)
- Schedule meeting with select outside parties and provide oversight of ED's schedule in coordination with executive assistant
- Serve as Board liaison and manage communications with board directors
- Coordinate Board meetings, maintain minutes of meetings, and manage corporate governance documents
- Provide coordinator support for various other projects, as needed
We're looking for an enthusiastic team player with the following:
- At least five years of post-undergrad work experience, preferably working with an executive-level manager
- OUTSTANDING written and verbal communication skills; Communications experience a plus
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate confidently and effectively with colleagues in all organization functions
- A strong identification with, and a passion for mission-driven social purpose work
- Strong analytical skills and proficiency with technology, particularly MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic Human Resources Manager to manage daily HR responsibilities and apply a proactive, strategic approach in assessing HR needs with regard to long term organization goals and projects. This is a generalist role that includes recruitment, employee relations, payroll and benefits, and HR administration.
General responsibilities include:
- Manage the recruitment process for staff, temporary, consultant and intern positions from creation of job descriptions through orientation of new hires, including managing internal and external job postings, screening and interviewing of candidates and negotiation and extension of offers.
- Manage employee relations including performance and disciplinary issues and maintain and adapt policy and practice as appropriate.
- Process and maintain bi-weekly payroll and benefit programs including: addition of new employees; salary adjustments; benefit open enrollment, time-off program, and ad-hoc projects and reporting as needed.
Successful candidates will have experience in a non-profit, mission-driven environment, as well as:
- Five to seven years HR generalist experience
- Demonstrated ability to work with and build relationships with all levels of staff
- A professional, resourceful style with the ability to work as a team member or independently
- Relentless energy and drive toward achieving goals, with an entrepreneurial approach to problem-solving
- A friendly, collegial personality with compulsive integrity, and a well conditioned sense of humor

+ Events & Advocacy Coordinator

We are seeking an exceptional Events & Advocacy Coordinator who will be an integral member of the Advocacy team, providing support to both the Events Manager and Associate Director of Advocacy and Policy. The Events & Advocacy Coordinator will play a critical role in providing administrative support for the implementation of all events, particularly the annual December fundraiser, and additionally will provide general support to the Advocacy team as a whole.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Manage the database and guest list for the annual fundraiser: update attendee status and contact information, record donations, and make follow up phone calls
- Assist with the follow-up and management of sponsors
- Create event materials: attendee lists, signage, receipts, evaluations, sign up sheets
- Identify events or organizations in other states to partner with on events as well as websites on which to publicize events and post information
- Track and evaluate event and advocacy communications
- Calculate event costs/profits and processing invoices
- Manage the event reminder list and thank you notes and respond to general event and advocacy inquiries
- Manage the day to day administration of the Federal and State PACs including data entry and reporting
- Assist with mailings (thank you letters, invitations and returned mail)
- Schedule meetings (for endorsement interviews)
- Track, update, and manage contact information for partners, policymakers, and speakers
- Other tasks as assigned by the Events Manager or Associate Director of Advocacy and Policy
We're looking for an enthusiastic team player with a Bachelors Degree as well as the following:
- 1-2 years demonstrated experience in event planning preferred; minimum of 1 year administrative experience preferred
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail and the ability to resolve problems quickly and effectively – a proactive rather than reactive approach
- Very strong written and oral communication skills and strong analytical skills as well as proficiency with technology, particularly MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- An outgoing, positive personality and excellent sense of humor with very strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact diplomatically with diverse internal and external individuals (colleagues, members, speakers, donors)
- Ability to work independently, prioritize, and multi-task under tight deadlines; ability to work as a team member as well
- Willingness to work evenings for, or in preparation for events
